Beyond the Law Office...

The Kent Bramlett Foundation, Inc., & Hundred Oaks Castle

Tucked away in the rolling hills of Winchester, Tennessee, there stands one of only thirteen historic castles in the United States.  Documented in the Smithsonian's Guide to Historic Places in America, Hundred Oaks Castle was built in 1889.  Its history stretches through time and tragedy, complete with seasons of magnificence and moments of destruction.  But it has survived, and has become a testament to the Bramlett family's strength of heart and faith in God.

A merciless fire consumed a significant part of the century-old structure in 1990.  It burned out of control through the beautiful ballroom and majestic towers.  The fire claimed the memories of years and families past, and left an irreparable mark of tragedy on the smoke-stained walls and smoldering, hand-carved planks of wood.  As tragically brilliant flames painted the evening sky, the middle section of the castle was destroyed in its entirety, and the grounds were left in ruins.  The great windows were boarded up and the charred entrances were locked.

Two years later, in 1992, the castle lay in towering ruin, open to natural elements of wind and rain, wild animals and vandals.  At the same time, the Bramlett family of Nashville, Tennessee was coming to grips with their own personal tragedy in the death of their older son Kent.

Kent attended David Lipscomb schools from third grade through high school, when he graduated as President of his senior class.  He spent two years on an academic scholarship at Lipscomb University in Nashville, where he was an officer of the Gamma Xi Fraternity.  He transferred to the University of Mississippi in 1992 where he pledged the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and was pursuing a combined bachelor's and master's degree in accounting.

Kent's promising, beautiful life was taken in a fatal car accident on October 8, 1992,  just four days shy of his twentieth birthday.  His cherished Renee died a few hours later from her own injuries sustained in the early morning crash.

But the Bramletts and their younger son, Robert, saw a purpose through their tears.  They chose to celebrate and honor Kent's life through the charter of the Kent Bramlett Foundation, Inc., established with the sole purpose of making a difference in other people's lives.  The Bramletts decided to use the Foundation to expand the opportunities for others to enjoy the beauty and creativity of the arts that Kent loved so much, but they lacked a tangible outlet for their efforts.

Coincidentally, Mrs. Bramlett prayed for something like a castle... and in 1996, the former owners of Hundred Oaks advertised that their castle needed a king.  They were looking to deed the fallen property to someone who had an interest in art and music, someone who would undertake the castle's restoration.  The Foundation's purpose and the Castle's needs were a perfect match, and so the Bramletts and the Kent Bramlett Foundation, Inc. (out of over 150 other organizations that applied) were chosen as Hundred Oaks Castle's new royal family.

The Bramletts lengthy list of talents and commitment to the arts gave reason for their Foundation's approval.

In a less advertised part of this lifetime project, the Bramletts have used their Foundation and their Castle to help others heal in the face of tragedy such as their own.  The Castle has proved to be a place of escape and a method of healing.  It is a hiding place from the pressures and demands of everyday life that can overwhelm a heart in a stage of sorrow and grief.  The Bramletts have offered refuge for families who have lost a loved one in their own lives, a place for them to come and stay in the setting of cherished memories of a family who can understand their pain.  The Bramletts also offer personal counseling for visitors who need a gentle and compassionate ear to relate their burdens.  Their efforts are extended in love and memory, for the solace of mending hearts, to touch a tear-stained soul.

Due to the efforts of the Bramletts in the restoration of the Castle, it is now listed as one of the Ten Most Romantic castles in the World.
